Larner Vineyard in Ballard Canyon’s western-most reaches is influenced by coastal breezes and evening fog, making it one of the coolest sites in the Santa Ynez Valley. Peerless farming, excellent (for grape growing) soil, and the attention to detail given at this great site produce truly amazing fruit. Alta Mesa Vineyard’s Mourvedre and Grenache grow on decomposed granite, gneiss, schist, basalt and clay loam at 3200 feet above sea level. Superb clonal selection, tight spacing, huge day/night temperature differentials and meticulous vineyard work produce grapes that yield vibrant, complex and compelling wines.

The dark ruby/plum-tinged 2008 Grenache l’Ange Rouge is a sexy, opulent effort oozing with raspberries and kirsch liqueur. Silky smooth, full-bodied, and seductive, drinking this irresistible red is reminiscent of liquified candy. Consume it over the next several years.
I was impressed last year with this winery’s 2007s and 2006s, and they have continued to build on that portfolio with their current group of 2008s and late-released 2007s.

"Generous ripe, sweet plum and blackberry fruit is full-bodied, floral, intense, complex and concentrated, building depth and leading to red and black
licorice flavors, with a spicy aftertaste. Drink now through 2018. 210 cases made. –JL" 93 Points
