Matanzas Creek 2008 Chardonnay Sonoma, 2008
Matanzas Creek 2008 Chardonnay Sonoma, 2008

Matanzas Creek

A Matanzas Creek classic, our 2008 Chardonnay is sourced from estate-owned vineyards throughout the Sonoma county. Our focus on this wine continues to be Bennett Valley and Carneros with small amounts of Russian River fruit added for extra character. With notes of pears, apples and white currant lead to a creamy mid-palate with a wonderful mineral finish. Try it with butternut squash risotto, it's delicious!

Baltimore Sun

April 05, 2011|By Michael Dresser, The Baltimore Sun
There are many California chardonnays whose producers fancy that they've made a wine worth $30. Most are dead wrong. Many are hardly drinkable. But this rich white wine from Matanzas Creek is the real deal — a perfect balance of fruit and oak that almost restores my faith in this category. The flavors are no surprise — apple, pear, vanilla, lemon, toast — but they come with layer upon layer of complexity. Yes, this may be a bit of a splurge, but it would hold its own with wines twice its price. Brilliant!

The Story

Naturally defined by the three mountain peaks that envelop it, Bennett Valley existed for many years in quiet obscurity – bountifully sustaining an agricultural community that had all but forgotten the valley’s pre-prohibition viticultural roots. It wasn’t until 1977 with the founding of Matanzas Creek Winery that the area’s winemaking potential was once again unearthed. But Matanzas Creek didn’t just breathe new life into the area, it helped revolutionize the entire industry and, in the process, put Bennett Valley back on the map. And now, over thirty years after the release of its first vintage, Matanzas Creek stands at the forefront of California viticulture. Each day yields new and exciting discoveries, and the winery’s future is as bright as its universally celebrated past.
