Hartwell Vyds 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Stag's Leap District Napa Valley, 1999
Hartwell Vyds 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Stag's Leap District Napa Valley, 1999
Wine Advocate
A dense ruby/purple color is followed by aromas of licorice, black fruit, earth, and new oak. The wine is medium to full-bodied, tannic, and generously endowed, with a tight, austere finish. This 1999 requires another 1-2 years of cellaring, and should provide fun drinking over the next 12-15 years. Score: 88 - Robert Parker, August 2002.

Wine Enthusiast

A dense, rich wine with a strong herb-and-spice edge. It fans out, however, to reveal more fruit; blackberries, cassis and plums come to mind. Anise and chocolate flavors are also in evidence. Cedary edged tannins offer a fine framework in this complex wine, which should age beautifully. Score: 93 - Jeff Morgan, November 15, 2002.

Wine Spectator

Absolutely gorgeous, beautifully defined fruit, with uncommon richness and purity of flavor, gushing with ripe currant, blackberry and wild berry fruit, revealing extra facets and dimensions, with a long, intricate, detailed finish. Firmly tannic, but a wealth of fruit pushes through. Best from 2003 through 2012. 1,300 cases made. Score: 96 - James Laube, November 15, 2002.

The Vineyards

Hartwell Vineyards is unique even within the Stags Leap district. Though the entire area is covered in rich volcanic soil, our vineyards are planted on the slope of an actual dormant volcano. Our home sits right on top of the hill at the site where the last eruption happened four million years ago.

Today, steep terrain, rocky soils, and the only granite rock in the Stags Leap District allow us to control the amount of water each vine needs.  The xceptional drainage from the rocky slopes forces vines to conserve their production to just a few tight clusters of small grapes. This forced state of stress produces the most intense fruit, which in turn yields wine of uncommon depth, richness, concentration and longevity.
