Venge Vineyards 2010 Scout's Honor Proprietary Red Napa Valley
Venge Vineyards 2010 Scout's Honor Proprietary Red Napa Valley

Venge Vineyards
The 2010 tasting notes are not available at the moment.  Until then, we have kept the earlier vintage information up for reference.  Thank you, LMG.

The vintage was very intense and allowed for wines of wonderful concentration and stature in both the barrel and bottle. This vintage is an eclectic assemblage with light violets, crushed herbs, red cherry and licorice scents in the nose. The palate is driven with femininity from the Zin with loads of ripe red berry and cherry and enveloping masculinity of mineral, char and tannin flavors from the Syrah, Charbonno and Petite Sirah. This is a largely structured wine and not for the weak of heart nor imagination. With time this wine will certainly find itself developing wonderfully and finding even more harmony.

Vineyard Notes
Fruit was sourced from five single-vineyard sources in Napa Valley. The majority of Zin and a small component of Petite Sirah are from our former Venge Vineyard aka. Rossini Ranch, in St. Helena as well as Zinfandel from the Moss Creek Vineyard in the gorgeous Cappelle Valley in the eastern reaches of Napa Valley. The Charbonno is 60 years old and is entirely sourced from the noble Frediani Vineyard in Calistoga. The Baranek Vineyard in Clarksburg supplies us Petite Sirah and lastly, the Syrah is from the Muhlner Vineyard in Napa’s Chiles Valley.

Venge Vinyards
The Venge family has farmed vitis viniferra varieties in Napa Valley for nearly a half-century. It is a journey that began when Knud Venge migrated from Denmark to the United States in the early 1900’s. Knud's son, Per Venge, found his passion in the wine and spirits industry and started Vencom Imports, focusing on the importation of Western European fine wines and spirits. It was Per's son, Nils Venge, who left the family business in the 1960's with a vision to study viticulture at UC Davis and establish the family namesake as an icon within the winegrowing community.
The family's viticultural roots flourished in 1976 with the purchase of a 17-acre vineyard in the Oakville District that was planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This fortunate development cast the family among the winemaking pioneers of Napa Valley.
Nils' son, Kirk Venge, gravitated to winemaking at an early age. He proved to be as talented a winemaker as his father, making wines in his own style, with a vision to build his own legacy in the valley. In 2008, Kirk achieved his lifelong dream and acquired full ownership of Venge Vineyards from his family. Today, Kirk continues the Napa Valley heritage, focusing on select vineyard sites that produce fruit worthy of bearing the Venge family name.

Good stuff!
Better than the 2008, probably because of the additional Petite Sirah.

Venge is one of our favorite winemakers, so we decided to buy and try right away. Picked this up last night at LMG. It is much like what the Wine Notes describe. Fruit forward is the wine term used; right now, you can really feel the tannins - I suspect from Petite Sirah. It is great right now with the food of your choice, and will probably soften over time - if you have the patience - and storage - to wait! Excellent.
